Subject: - BACK RUBBER OIL
For the past 5-6 years, my grazier customers have been asking me to produce a " Buffalo Fly " oil to carry their insecticide.
In the past, they used old used sump oil that worked quite well but left the cattle marked and their hides "stained" and was contaminating the meat.
Then they tried vegetable oil which the cattle loved the taste of, and when they could not lick any more oil off the back rubbers, they chewed them to pieces. Now they tell me that as the insecticide went straight through the cattle, the active ingredient has killed off a great percentage of their 'dung beetles.'
In the second half of last year, I supplied the DPI at Brian Pastures Gayndah, and Glen Sibson of the DPI at the centre for wet tropics agriculture South Johnstone, with a sample of oil to carry their insecticide and for trial on their back rubbers.
After slight modification, we managed to get the absorption rate correct and now Glen is very happy.
I also supplied some of my customers with samples for testing, and it is very gratifying to have them buying replacement oil.
The best recommendation to date is that a government representative drove into Ashley Downs, (Robert & Caryl Loveday) Wandoan. His remarks were along the lines: "It was good to see the cattle were not troubled by Buffalo Flies and most important, the hides were very clean and not blotchy".
